QuietPivot™ Doors at the University of Toronto Mississauga - Case Study
Problem
The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) embarked on an ambitious three-phase master plan to enhance the student experience by creating a centralized Student Services Hub (SSH) within the William G. Davis Building. This space was designed to streamline various student services into one primary location, making them more accessible and integrated into daily campus life. However, the renovation faced several challenges, including the need to create a seamless connection with the adjacent Meeting Place and provide a distinct and inviting new entrance for the campus's largest and most trafficked building. Additionally, the design required spaces that support a variety of student needs, from learning and collaboration to counseling and wellness, all while ensuring a quiet and conducive environment in a bustling campus setting.
Solution
To meet these challenges, Noise Barriers supplied their QuietPivot™ Acoustical Sound Control Door, which was critical in achieving the acoustical requirements of the SSH, inaddition to integrating oversized sidelites. These doors were selected for their superior sound control capabilities, ensuring the new SSH spaces could serve as quiet zones, essential for the well-being and focus of students utilizing these services. The QuietPivot Doors provided the necessary acoustic separation between different areas, including offices, meeting rooms, and student-focused spaces, without compromising on the aesthetic and functional design of the building. Noise Barriers worked directly with the general contractor, Morosons Construction, to deliver and install the doors.
Results
The installation contributed significantly to the success of the SSH, which opened in 2023. The doors provided the necessary acoustical insulation, enabling the SSH to deliver on its promise of creating a functional, fluid, and lively environment for students. The project not only enhanced the physical space but also transformed the way students engage with essential resources at UTM, promoting well-being and efficient service delivery. The SSH now stands as a testament to UTM’s commitment to creating top-tier student experiences, with the QuietPivot doors playing a crucial role in maintaining a conducive and serene environment amidst the bustling campus.
